449
Now Playing: THE WHITE SHADOW
449. That's the number of movies I watched in 2005. Sounds like a lot, but it's actually way down from 2004, when I saw an astounding 588! Maybe I had more of a life this year, as unlikely as it sounds. I can partially attribute the decrease to the growing proliferation of TV shows on DVD. I spent a lot of time this year plowing through episodes of THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO, THE BOB NEWHART SHOW, THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE WHITE SHADOW, COLUMBO, DANGER MAN, DRAGNET, THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN and who knows how many more. I've got several TV DVD sets lying around that I've barely even cracked, including four seasons of TWILIGHT ZONE, T.J. HOOKER, BOOMTOWN, KOJAK, L.A. HEAT, LOVE THAT BOB, THE PRISONER...whew.

Of the 449 movies I saw, I watched 252 of them for the first time. As far as the count goes, only feature films count, no matter whether I saw them in a theater, DVD, VHS or on TV.
TV shows don't count, unless they were presented in a format resembling a feature film (for instance, the VHS tape DOUBLE JEOPARDY, which consists of two episodes of DAN AUGUST edited together to form a single, albeit sloppy, narrative).
Made-for-TV movies count.
Documentaries count.
I didn't count short subjects or feature-length making-of documentaries included as DVD extras (for instance, the 2 1/2-hour docu on the KING KONG DVD).
Movie serials count as one long-ass feature.
Multiple viewings each count as a separate movie (for instance, I watched FOR YOUR HEIGHT ONLY three times, so I marked it down as three "different" movies).
These are my rules; your mileage may vary.

Just for fun, a few stats:
First film of 2005: DELTA FORCE 2
Last film of 2005: NEW YEAR'S EVIL

From the 1930's: 3 (KING KONG, WEST OF SHANGHAI, PRIVATE DETECTIVE)
1940's: 7 (includes two serials: DRUMS OF FU MANCHU and THE CRIMSON GHOST)
1950's: 20
1960's: 40
1970's: 114
1980's: 126
1990's: 72
2000-2004: 47
2005: 20

20 has got to be an all-time low for me, but I just am not so willing anymore to visit a theater to endure 20 (or more if you get there early) minutes of ads, high prices, obnoxious crowds, poor theater conditions, bad sound, shoddy projection and uncomfortable seating, when I can Netflix the same movie a few months later. Or even buy the damn thing for nearly the same price it would cost to buy a ticket and some concessions. Outside of B-Fest in January, I went to the theater only nine times this year. And not since June 25 (BATMAN BEGINS). As much as I used to love the theater-going experience--and back in the '80s and early '90s, I was going once or twice a week, every week--it has deteriorated to the point where I don't care if I ever go back. If someone calls and says, "Hey, let's go to the movies," sure, I'll go, but it's hard for me to drag myself out.

October: 21 (last year's least was also in October)

how do you keep track? do you have a movie journal? i know i've seen a shitload. and i've seen a lot of the ones you've seen because i was with you for some of them. but i have seen a lot on my own too. i should start keeping track. your numbers are impressive. we just saw that dick and jane movie. don't waste your money. and i somehow sat through surviving christmas. can't get that part of my life back. i asked for land of the dead for the holidays and didn't get it. wtf?! but i did get batman begins because i bought it for mike. ha.

I keep a spreadsheet--Works at home and Excel at work. I mark the title, year of release and the format in which I watched it (VHS, DVD, CIN).

Stuff like FUN WITH DICK AND JANE and SURVIVING CHRISTMAS is another reason I don't go out to movies anymore. Why do that when I can watch STUNT ROCK and SAMURAI COP right here??

As hard as I tried - and I did make a concerted effort to average a movie a day - my total for the year was only 250, 146 viewed for the first time. That averages out to 4.81 movies per week.

First films of 2005 (both January 1st): ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY and SCHLOCK - THE SECRET HISTORY OF AMERICAN CINEMA
Last film of 2005 (December 31st): KING KONG VS. GODZILLA
Only one title viewed twice during the year: TERROR AT ORGY CASTLE
Most movies per month: October - 27
Least movies per month: December - 15

Totals by Decade:
20s - 1
30s - 5
40s – 3
50s – 10
60s – 56
70s – 94
80s – 43
90s – 7
2000-2004 – 19
2005 - 13
(Note: MST3K - "MANOS" THE HANDS OF FATE counted twice for 60s and 90s. Otherwise I believe I stayed consistent with your method of scoring.)

This was the first year I kept a movie diary. I just did it in Word (so I hope my math's not off!), but for 2006 I will definitely switch to Excel.

I don't count MST3K episodes, but I can't argue with your method. I think I only watched 3 or 4 episodes last year.

Excel is probably best, but I only have Microsoft Works on my home computer. It works fine, considering how simple this spreadsheet is, but it's more unwieldy than Excel.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, for MST3K episodes I should probably just count the film itself as distinct from the TV show (which shouldn't count anyways, then).

I think my wife might divorce me if I watched 449 movies in a year!

Happy New Year, Marty! Don't go supporting terrorists! ;-)

I don't keep track of every single one, but I can list the movies I saw in the theatres. I take the girlfriend to a movie about twice a month, and often my dad goes to the movies with me when I visit him 2-3 times a month as well. Without further ado, here's the films I actually saw at either a first or second run theatre in 2005:

SKY HIGH (the sleeper of the summer; one of the year's best!)
THE DUKES OF HAZZARD (lousy)
THE SKELETON KEY (excellent, tight script, well cast thriller; deserved better at the boxoffice)
THE LONGEST YARD (2005) (as lousy as THE DUKES)
TWO FOR THE MONEY (Pacino is hammy and fun as always, but the film is below average at best)
WEDDING CRASHERS (funny;peters out in the second half though)
THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN (solid comedy)
SHOPGIRL (Steve Martin should write more; how he can go from pure crap like CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 to something as thought-provoking and well acted as this film is beyond me; this is a very good sleeper)
KING KONG (2005) (well done, but flawed)
THE GREAT RAID (heart was in the right place; but unfortunately this was one boring film)
SIN CITY (my choice for the best film I saw all year)
SAW II (for what it is, effective; impressive for its budget)
THE CONSTANT GARDENER (pretentious adult drama)
A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (one of the year's most overrated films IMO, but a great performance by Viggo Mortenson)
THE ARISTOCRATS (funniest film of the year! Also, great to see Larry Storch back on the big screen)
NARNIA (very well done in every way IMO; just a really good family film)
DREAMER: INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY (Kurt rules, but this is a forgettable, predictable family film; see SKY HIGH instead)
THE RING TWO (stunk; worst horror film I saw this year)

Off the top of my head, that's the complete list.

I almost forgot; WALK THE LINE, which was well done, if a tad overlong, with two lead performances sure to be Oscar-nominated (and both deserving IMO)
